Why Captain Jack Sparrow is so Appealing

Johnny Depp's Character in Pirates of the Caribbean Steals the Show
0 21 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 There are many reasons why fans flock to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies; the movies are full of action and beautiful scenery, the plots are exciting and entertaining, and the special effects are enjoyable. However, I believe the main reason most fans rush to see these movies is Captain Jack Sparrow.

Formed and played, with immense charm and finesse, by Johnny Depp, Captain Jack Sparrow is not only entertaining but is inspiring as well. The latter may seem a stretch to some who read this but Jack Sparrow fans will understand what I am talking about, and fiction writers should pay attention to why this character is so popular.

Captain Jack Sparrow is inspiring because the character speaks to our innermost adventurous, independent, creative, daring sides. In the real world, we do not feel we have time to be adventurous, creative and daring. There are bills to pay, responsibilities to keep, and a quiet, common life to live. Boring!

Captain Jack Sparrow is the rebel fans wish they could be. He lives completely by his own rules and gets away with doing so. Though he may run from fights when he can (and he chooses to do so often), he is no coward just a bit self-serving. His self-serving behaviors do not make us hate him though. He is a jerk at times, yes, but in such an amusing way. It takes an awful lot of chutzpah to live as he does, so far outside the status quo.

Oh how this appeals to many of us who live in the white bread world. We know the world of Pirates of the Caribbean is fictitious. We know that in real life swords get very heavy and sword fighting, thus, is brutally exhausting. We also know that many of the things Captain Jack Sparrow does are despicable (as is typical of any pirate) and not worthy of imitation.

Despite Jack Sparrow's moral failings, Johnny Depp manages to make the character loveable. Through talented use of body language and vocal tone, Depp creates a very human, multifaceted, believable character. Captain Jack Sparrow is by no means a cookie cutter character he is unlike any pirate we have ever met on screen (or off). He is not a muscle-bound he-man; in fact, his mannerisms are somewhat effeminate at times which wildly, and wonderfully, contrasts with the typical brutal action-adventure character. And although he uses more brains than brawn, he does not lack athleticism.

The character works so well because Jack Sparrow appeals to our inner desire to be ourselves without constraining ourselves so much socially and without censoring our personality. As we enter the world of Pirates of the Caribbean, we can imagine, for a while, what it would be like to be such a self-assured and free person.

Bravo, Johnny Depp, for creating such a perfect, enjoyable, character.

New director for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 !!!

Ever since Gore Verbinski passed on directing the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie in order to work on bringing Bioshock to the big screen, people have been wondering if he'd be back -- especially once all of the steam let out of the latter production. But now word is that Verbinski is still busy working on other projects and won't be returning for Pirates of the Caribbean.

Director Gore Verbinski will head Pirates of the Caribbean IV

Cue Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer searching for a new director in hopes of getting the fourth Pirates done quickly so that Johnny Depp, who plays the series' Captain Jack Sparrow, can move on to star in The Lone Ranger. And Disney might have found their director in Rob Marshall. Though no official word on the matter has been given, sources say that the studio has already begun casting for the film, showing that things may be looking up in time for Pirates of the Carribean 4 to start filming next year.

Director Gore Verbinski, who was in charge of the first three opus of Pirates of the Caribbean. He is still attracted to the idea of using modern technology to resurrect a genre that had disappeared after the Golden Age of Hollywood. But he does want Pirates of the Caribbean 4 to be a let down movie, he was quoted saying:

"[...] the big danger is diminishing the brand [...] it would have to be a tale worthy of telling"

And for him to return he noted that:

"I would start fresh and focus on the further adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow."

Director Gore Verbinski has not yet confirmed his commitment but I'm quite sure he will be attached to the fourth Pirates of the Caribbeans movie one way or anoter.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: "New details revealed"

Pirates of the Caribbean 4We have some new details about Pirates of the Caribbean 4:

"We're going to shoot Pirates 4 in April and May of next year. We are going to release it hopefully in 2011. Pirates 4 would hopefully be the first of another trilogy."
Walt Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv

Also thanks to Hollywood Elsewhere, via one of their trustworthy sources, we got confirmation of the Fountain of Youth plot with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) looking for the legendary fountain. And it seems that a new villain who's a kind of Captain Nemo utilizing new-style technology will be introduced.

It's not yet clear though if Director Gore Verbinski is returning: Disney wants to scale down the movie budget, so it's not sure Verbinski would come back..

Well I really hope they start filming asap so we may watch the movie Pirates of the Caribbean 4 in 2011.

Pirates of The Caribbean 4 in 2011 Johnny Depp is back as Jack Sparrow

Pirates of the Caribbean 4Walt Disney Pictures succeeded in both reviving the pirate movie genre and creating a successful franchise with Pirates of The Caribbean. So no wonder they don't want to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs and try to reap as much profit as they can from it.

That's why it has been decided to produce Pirates of The Caribbean 4. The movie is slated for a 2012 release. Update: the movie Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is now scheduled for a release in 2011!

Quite sad we have to wait so long but I bet it will be worth it!

Cast of Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Keira Knightley as Elizabeth SwannIt has been reported that Keira Knightley does not wish to continue playing her character of Elizabeth Swann, she prefers to commit to different projects.

Orlando Bloomb as Will TurnerAbout Orlando Bloom who had the role of Will Turner: well, if Keira Knightley does not come back the dude is useless. Actually I'd rather not see him come back: it will be more time on screen for Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow!

Johnny Depp as Pirate Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 4Johnny Depp has officially signed on for Pirates of the Caribbean in September 2008. I am so glad he is back as the pirate Jack Sparrow! I agree with Director Gore Verbinski: Pirates of The Caribbean 4 should focus on Jack Sparrow. I really like this facetious character: if it was not Johnny Depp's performance I doubt the Pirates of the Caribbean would have ever taken off to the box office.

Plot of the Pirates of the Caribbean 4

No details of the plot officially announced yet. But according to the book The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean, the proposed story for the fourth film was for Sparrow and Barbossa to meet up in the newly founded New Orleans, Louisiana, before they sail to find the Fountain of Youth together.

One may imagine that he's getting bored on his ghost ship and tries to explore new horizons but would need the help of the fountain of youth to survive...

Nothing confirmed yet though, the plot may still be completely different!

Really hope Walt Disney Pictures will carry out this project: Pirates of The Caribbean 4 must be produced for the fans!
